The isolation of the Laredo studio from 1994 thru 1996 gave Glassford insight into where he could develop as a creative and eventually helped him realize that acting on compulsions can be fortuitous and creatively helpful. A selection of these early designs alongside other artworks will illustrate this organic evolution that straddles both art and design during this period. Years later, Glassford circled back to artwork and began making murals of wood cuttings he collected from his furniture factory floor. Compulsively, he embraced a chaotic energy – the opposite of design -- and composed the murals randomly like small accidents, cutting the discarded material and fitting together pieces. The viewer is engaged wordlessly with an action that is now fixed on a panel, with small sparks of organic matter that were once a tree. The murals are the artistic bookend to the Laredo years that set-in motion his design career.
